Classic jazz?! Uh, ok, we'll see. Come by and we'll run down to James Joyce or the Avondale Pizza Cafe afterwards for a couple.
Theatre troupe Gateway Performance Productions, the improv comedy of The Blacktop Circus and guitarist/singer Dolph Amick are all on the bill for this Saturday's Late Night Saturday at the Academy Theatre.
The fun begins at 10:30 p.m. at the Academy, 119 Center Street (Behind the Towne Cinema), Avondale Estates. As always, the 90-minute program is designed to be a potpourri of surprises, delights and the always-unexpected.
Actor, singer, musician and all-around entertainer Dolph Amick offers a mix of original songs, bluegrass, classic jazz and rock -- everything from Fats Waller to Judas Priest.
Gateway presents a "Cabaret Evening of Masks and Mime," featuring troupe co-founders Sandra Hughes and Michael Hickey, plus dancer (and magician's assistant) Jerilynn Bedingfield, while Blacktop presents its new vision of improv that has made them Atlanta's leading African-American improvisational comedy troupe for 10 years.
Admission is $8.00. But -- a $3.00 discount is offered with a receipt from any Avondale Estates business or restaurant. Free parking is available in the theatre's lot, and refreshments are in the lobby. For information or reservations call 404 583-1270 or e-mail academylatenights@yahoo.com

Hello, all, and Drink hail!
I just wanted to let it be known that our little musical ensemble, Three Quarter Ale, has just finished our second CD, Intertwined, and we'd love for any and all of you to come celebrate its unveiling with us!
Immediately following the Saturday, December 9th evening production of "A Christmas Carol" at the New American Shakespeare Tavern in downtown Atlanta, we'll be having a special concert and CD Release Party, along with a few surprise pals (musical and otherwise...okay, fine, we know we've got Joni Minstrel and Holdyn Twyst so far). Festivities start at 10pm...$5 at the door or free with your ticket to "A Christmas Carol".
Please spread the word...we're trying to really pack the joint...the more the merrier! We'll post all the latest updates on our website. Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you all soon!

Appropriated from thunder24:
1. Grab the nearest book. 2. Open the book to page 123. 3. Find the fifth sentence. 4. Post the text of the next 3 sentences on your blog along with these instructions. 5. Don’t you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest. 6. Tag three people.
(...As the closest book was an anthology of classic 1940's Shazam! comics, I'll take the liberty of adding stage directions.)
Captain Marvel: (slugging thugs) We'll all take a hand in it! Thug #1: (firing a gun ineffectually) Don't be afraid of him! Thug #2: (wiggling a large dagger in the air, despite the fact that even bullets seem to do no harm to Captain Marvel) Knock his ears in!
Oh, I hate to pressure people, but I guess I'll tag elliedee, pacotelic, and tempest_gypsy.

Okay --- here's the meme:
Name classic songs that you first heard as samples in hip-hop or techno, without knowing what the original sample came from. The better-known the original riff/lick is by the general population, the better, whether you subsequently became a fan of the original thing or not (the idea is to make people say "What?! Everyone knows that old song!"). For example, the first place I ever took note of Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean" was actually in "She's Crafty" by the Beastie Boys. Here are some other classics that I was previously ignorant of:
"Who's That Lady" by the Isley Brothers (sampled by Beastie Boys) "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath (Ice-T) "Magic Man" by Heart (Ice-T)

Ask me what's wrong with this country and I guarantee you'll get an earful...but something always comes along to make me thank my lucky stars I live in America. This article is, quite frankly, terrifying.

Hi, folks! I miss communicating with everyone. Hope everyone is well.
I am very tired right now...it's been a coupla almost completely sleepless nights...but I feel buoyant nonetheless, 'cause I just finished a music assignment that I've been working on since, literally, like March. *whew*
You probably heard me talkin' about it (and talking and talking and TALKING about it)...music for a Kaiser Permanente Educational Theatre children's show on health and fitness. Half an hour of songs for broccoli puppets to lip-sync to. And I must say, I think it came out pretty cool. To me, at least.
The assignment was quite open: 30 minutes of pre-show music plus some internal songs and cues. I guess I coulda just done three 10-minute loops of computer music, but I thought it'd be more fun to do a dozen 2-3 minute long pop songs in all differnt genres...and frankly, I wouldn't have wanted to sit through 3 ten-minute-long meandering things as a kid (or now, for that matter. Sorry, Rick Wakeman).
So there's a 60's janglepop song. There's a C&C Music Factory spoof. There's an 80's hair metal number, a Bob Dylan-esque folk tune, a James Bond theme-type thingy, surf music, a horrifying country-meets-polka monstrosity, etc., etc. It's pretty silly. Well, actually, it's VERY silly.
You know, if there weren't a deadline, these recording projects would never end, 'cause you're always adding, tweaking, reworking things until the last possible second, seriously. Plus, writing, playing and mixing all this stuff from the ground up was essentially like doing a whole album.
But AH! NOW IT'S DONE! :)) I'm so psyched.
One of my Kaiser clients was discussing the project with me this week, and she said she was glad I had made the project so fun. I was like, "Well, yeah, fun for me, anyway, but I don't know how much the kids will dig stuff like the 80's hair metal!" Then she made my day by laughingly saying, "Actually, at the last show, some of the kids in the audience were air-guitaring to it; so I guess it lives on."
So WOOHOO! Ah, I'm so thrilled to be done!! Plus, now I can invoice Kaiser for the rest of my fee (*whew*) and start readying myself for the next project: recording Three Quarter Ale! *bites nails*

OK, gotta run, got important stuff to do, but I'll throw this in...
List five songs that you are currently digging ... it doesn't matter what genre they are from, whether they have words or even if they're any good but they must be songs you're really enjoying right now. Post these instructions, the artist and the song in your blog along with your five songs.
1. It's Funky Enough, D.O.C. 2. Flowers Would Blush, Ben Hulan 3. My Forbidden Lover, Chic 4. Electricity, Suede 5. Rap Game's Hijacked, Ice-T

Very interesting. Although madladyred is right about the answers being too black-and-white...a lot of them I just had to choose one way or the other, even though my personal feelings were quite gray on some issues. I think that only a fool sees most of these complicated issues as absolutely all-or-nothing. It seems to me that my results suggest that I have some libertarian leanings.

( Here's that little movie meme that folks are doing. ) You know, I love talking about books and movies, and that was sort of a disappointingly short meme. On the other hand, it didn't take two hours to type my answers, either. Still, I'm inspired to add my own movie meme, for a little more in-depth look at what folks like.
